I recently moved cities, as many of you would know. This new city of mine had some crazy out-of-season rainfall in the past few weeks. Here’s how it looked:
This isn’t the only odd climate event this city deals with.
Over the past few years, the National Capital Region of India has emerged as the place with the worst PM 2.5 levels in the world! This means that living here is tough on your lungs unless you purchase an air purifier. I placed an order for mine today itself.
None of this is to say that this city sucks. In fact, I love living here!
I have met some of the most open-hearted, boisterous, and energetic people here. There is a sense of abundance to this city. I have made new friends faster than any other time in my life. I’ve also reconnected with old friends and enjoyed some fantastic experiences.
BUT the reality of this city as of today makes me think of what we are doing to our pretty planet long term.
In how many ways are we creating more unseasonal weather events. In how many lungs are we pumping microparticles of pollution! What would someone 100 years from now say about what we are doing to the planet?
So that’s what today’s poem is all about.
Alright, poem starts in 3… 2… 1!
"Oh yes, I remember!
A time from before -
the sun would come right up and shine.
Oh yes, I remember!
The rain and the snow.
The way that our seasons aligned.
I even remember,
the people who said,
that someday these comforts would go.
But we were so foolish,
we went right ahead,
our rashness continued to grow.
Consumption was virtue.
Petroleum was God.
And plastics were part of routine.
Our thinking was foolish.
Our lifestyles so flawed.
Our world started losing its greens.
If only we'd stopped
to consider our ways.
If only we'd made up our minds.
Our legacy could have been
much better days.
For you and for all of mankind.
I wish it were different
or better somehow.
A world that just wasn't so strange.
I wish we had listened!
I wish we had stopped!
But sadly it cannot be changed."
----
This letter is thankfully fiction today,
but you know it could just come true.
To stop it from happening, you know the way.
The question is - what will you do?
That’s it! This was edition 80 of Hello Universe, thanks for checking it out!

1. Check out podcast.ai: A new initiative that pushes the limits of artificial intelligence. With the transcripts and the voices generated by AI, podcast.ai brings to life an incredible scenario - conversations between two people that never happened - brought to life. It’s crazy how real it feels. Check it out to listen to a conversation between Joe Rogan and Steve Jobs!
2. Listen to “Visions” by Desmond Cheese: A solid EP through and through, this new drop from Desmond Cheese is a great companion to a lazy afternoon. Queue it up now! (YT Music link in title, Spotify widget below)
3. Watch “We’ve been working too hard” by Joel Haver - You know I love Joel. You know I’ve called him my favorite Youtube creator. You probably don’t know that he’s so funny, even SNL copied his idea!
From this funny man, comes a brand new video of 3 friends just hanging out. It is probably the funniest thing I’ve seen this entire month. Worth at least 3 repeat viewings. Watch now!
That’s it. See you next week!
Brilliant, this poem. Reading it a bit late, but it fits perfectly with the current COP27 meeting.
