The Voice
I love sci-fi short stories.
I came across a brilliant one yesterday, courtesy of Tom Scott’s newsletter, called “THE GRAVITY MINE”. Written by Stephen Baxter, a writer who specializes in the kind of big picture sci-fi that Isaac Asimov or H.G. Wells wrote; this short story is beautiful, imaginative, grand, weird, disorienting, and sensible - all at once.
You can read it by clicking here.
This story has a beautiful sentence, that reads -
She budded off from the rest, her consciousness made discrete, separated from the greater flow of minds and memories.
This line got me thinking about the concept of a discrete consciousness - a distillation of all our thoughts, actions, experiences, and existence, down to a single point. It made me think of my consciousness as an infinitesimal excited particle, surfing the waves of time, sculpted and molded by the universe it occupies. Sculpting and molding that universe right back.
And so, in the middle of all this thinking, I was reminded of a poem that I wrote about the voice inside my head. Or the voice inside your head. That persistent, subtle reminder that you are an entity that exists as much on the inside as you do on the outside. That feeling which goes my many names - “conscience”, “self, “inner compass” - yet, defies all description.
So here’s a poem about that voice. Here we go, poem starts in 3… 2… 1!
There is a voice inside of me,
that tells me what to do.
A constant stream of consciousness,
that makes up my worldview.
🧠
A guide to take decisions,
a director of my path.
That tells me what to write right here,
or when to take a bath.
🛀🚿
It's been with me for all my life,
and everywhere I've been.
It's heard the words that I have heard,
and seen all that I've seen.
👀
That voice is old as time itself,
it's always been around.
The clearest thing I've ever heard
although it has no sound.
🎙️🔊
I ask it many questions,
and sometimes it does reply.
It feels distinct and different,
yet together,
we are "I".
That’s it!
Today’s poem leans more on the thought-provoking side of my writing. Hope you liked it. ☺️
