Plans vs. Reality

Inspired by ancient Mesopotamian Wisdom Literature, I published a philosophical poem called “The Quarrel” seven months ago. I spent some time this weekend revisiting some of those concepts and felt inspired to attempt another philosophical poem along the same lines. To refresh your memory about the concept, here’s what I wrote about it last time:

Ancient Mesopotamia is the society that invented writing, and thus, these writings are the first example of humanity’s approach towards philosophy.

It was a society that loved to compete, and it manifested in their ability to debate. Their innovative style of philosophical debates personifies several non-living objects and makes them debate each other. For example -

Winter vs. Summer.

Sheep vs. Grains.

Hoes vs. Ploughs.

So that’s the spirit of today’s poem as well. And as the title suggests, it’s a contest between A Plan and The Reality.

I’m curious to know - what was the last plan you made, and how did it turn out? Before you read today’s poem, drop me a short, one line answer. You can also consider sharing your thoughts as a comment. I reply to all comments with a mini poem, so today might be your turn! 😀

Alright, poem starts in 3… 2… 1!

I am what's called "A Plan"
and you are "The Reality".
I think you to existence,
in the highest quality.

I find a way to sculpt you
and to mold you with my hand.
Throughout my life you are
what I attempt to understand.

I lure you and I lead you
into being how I would like.
I push you and I pull you,
I perceive you, and I strike.

I rigorously work my way,
I'm ready, I suit up.
I make my way throughout the
corridors that you've put up.

At last I've come to claim you mine,
to enter your domain.
To plant my flag, to stand my ground,
to share your joy and pain.

I’ll make you like myself, I think,
I’ll shape reality.
But when I look into your face,
I find that you’ve changed me.

That’s it! Thanks for reading edition no. 112 of Hello Universe!

Some Fun Stuff

This is a place where I recommend read-worthy, hum-worthy, and watch-worthy content from across the internet. The underlined words are links that you can click to access my suggestions:

1. Check out Realtime Colors - Ever been confused about which colors go best with each other? Check out Realtime colors, a website that helps you generate color palettes super intuitively, and has a great variety of palette styles to pick from. This will be a blessing to any web developer or graphic designer, so if that’s you dear reader, go ahead and check it out!

2. Listen to Midnight Mischief (Tom Misch Remix) by Jordan Rakei and Tom Misch: Anything by Tom Misch is as smooth as honey. This track is no different. LOVING IT! Check it out.

3. Watch “We can piss on the street in Amsterdam” by Hoog: Hoog is my favorite urban design and infrastructure channels on Youtube. What’s more, his videos are full of beautiful animations and transitions that pull the narrative along. In my visit to Amsterdam, these public urinals had come in handy but I had failed to appreciate their real purpose and beauty till I watched this video. You should check it out too!

That’s it for this week, see you next Tuesday!
