Another Person
There are times when you realize you have outgrown the person you have been till now, and are ready to evolve into a future version of yourself. That’s what I’ve been feeling over the past few months, and as a result, I’ve spent the last two weeks introspecting and reflecting on who I want to be going forward.
This is not the first time I’m doing this, I remember having these chats with myself ever since I became an adult. Each time I do this correctly, I find that I reach a moment that can be best described as the “before-after point” - a moment in time so transformative that I find myself to be a significantly different person than I was before that moment. A version of me used to exist before that moment, and a new version of me exists after it. A kind of growth, perhaps.
Today, I am sharing with you a poem that I wrote to capture the culmination of such before-after points - how the decisions made over a lifetime of such moments culminate into making one the person they really are.
Alright, poem starts in 3… 2… 1!
For every choice I chose to choose,
for every path I picked to go.
For every fight I fixed to lose,
for every speed I sped too slow.
For every person in my past,
for every lesson that I learned.
For each regret that I surpassed,
for every corner that I turned.
There was a life I could have seen,
there was a man I could have been.
But I can't let that get me dim,
for he's not me and I'm not him.
That’s it!
Today’s poem comes from some deeply personal experiences, yet I believe it will be relatable to all of us who have ever spent time reflecting. If you have some stories or insights on how you reflect and introspect, do share them in the comments!
Some fun stuff:
This is a place where I’ll be sharing something cool to read, something cool to listen to, and something cool to watch! The underlined words are links that you can click to visit the recommended content.
Read The Oatmeal: One of the OG webcomic artists, Matt Inman makes some of the most fun content on the internet!
Listen to The Memory Palace: Hands down my favorite podcast - with some exceptionally well written and well narrated episodes, Nate DiMeo captivates you with his renditions of little known stories from the past. His mellifluous voice, and his exceptional taste in background music is the icing on top of a really well made cake. You can also listen to it on Spotify by clicking here.
Watch Brian David Gilbert’s Unraveled series: Ever wanted to know what is Mario’s retirement plan? Or what is the perfect sport of the future? Brian David Gilbert, in his time working for Polygon, created some exceptionally entertaining, unhinged investigations into such questions that nobody asked! These are some incredibly well written, performed, and produced skits diving deep into video games that you have probably played and loved, so go check it out. And oh, he’s started exclusively focusing on his own channel for about a year, and things get pretty weird and hilarious over there too. Go check it out!
I would love it if you also shared some fun stuff that you love to read/ listen to/ watch across the internet, down in the comments.
See you next week!
